Injustice: Gods Among Us 2 Rumors Grow Stronger, Gets Teased by Creative Director

Injustice: Gods Among Us 2 looks to be the next game from NetherRealm Studios. In the wake of rumors that we’ll be witnessing its announcement before E3 2016, Creative Director Ed Boon has already begun teasing the game through his official Twitter account.

Known for playing around on social media to tease future projects, Boon began today by first sharing images of Aquaman. Following that, he replaced his Twitter avatar with the roman numeral II. The accompanying caption even asked the obvious question as to whether this was related to “MK 11 or Injustice 2”.

It’s highly unlikely that NetherRealm Studios would be going for another installment in the Mortal Kombat series at this point, especially since the last game just arrived in April 2015. This makes it all the more obvious that preceding rumors for an Injustice sequel were indeed legitimate.

Injustice: Gods Among Us was released in April 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, arriving on PC and other platforms later in the year. The game received mostly positive reviews; however, it failed to create a stronger niche for itself in the competitive sector. In that department, Mortal Kombat X has done far better. NetherRealm Studios would be banking on that experience to make sure that a sequel for Injustice: Gods Among Us simply doesn’t die in the hands of casual players.

That being said, there’s much that the developer needs to keep in check based on its recent experience with Mortal Kombat X. The PC version of the fighting game was an atrocity, with much of the blame laying with publisher Warner Bros. for cutting cost and outsourcing the Windows port over to a smaller studio. Mortal Kombat X saw to a botched launch on PC, with an unstable online experience that left many players disappointment. Further technical issues and other problems led many to simply give up on the game.

It would be in the studio’s best interest to either work on a proper PC release for its next game, or skip out on a PC port altogether.

It’s probable that we’ll be seeing Injustice: Gods Among Us 2 get announced at E3 2016, with a release set in April 2017.
