Instagram Reaches 600 Million Monthly Users; Doubles In Size In Two Years

Instagram has officially reached 600 million monthly users. It added its last 100 million users faster than ever before. Considering that the app reached 500 million users in June, that’s a 6 month period to grow by 100 million users. The app had previously gone from 400 to 500 million users in 9 months.

The app was bought by Facebook in 2012 when it had about 30 million users. After that, it rocketed to 100 million in 2013, 300 million in 2014 and so on, and so forth. Instagram’s popularity was compounded by its link with Facebook. Now that it was part of the eco-system, Instagram and Facebook could share the user base.

Instagram is expected to generate $1.5 billion in ad revenue this year and $5 billion by 2018 according to eMarketer. Instagram has continued to reel in users by introducing copies or variants of different services like Stories, that it stole from Snapchat and now live video, which was a feature of Facebook long before. Due to live video’s popularity among internet celebrities and regular old film and tv stars, the format has found a home on Instagram as well, at least in the US. This trend is supposed to be compounded by mobile shopping and tools that encourage product browsing within the app. This is something Facebook has been integrating into its own app for more than a year now. Ultimately, that’s the goal, creating an independent eco-system that brings everything into one app. Right now, you can seamlessly switch between Facebook, Messenger and Instagram and all of the other companion apps. It won’t be long until you won’t have to switch. All will be built

Kevin Systrom has outlined that he wants the world of Instagram to be a kind of 24/7 surveillance system that lets you see what’s happening around the world at any given moment in time. Now that might sound like the coolest thing ever to some people and Big Brother from George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four to others but it doesn’t matter what we think. The surveillance revolution is here. Facebook, Snapchat, Messenger, it’s all going to be one big show from now on.
