Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard’s free-to-play online collectible card game, has suddenly appeared on the Xbox Achievements page. A screenshot posted on NeoGAF reveals the game to be with “0” achievements while it gives a “Page Not Found” error when accessed.
Without an official confirmation it remains to be established whether the game is finally being released on consoles or if this is simply an error on someone’s part. According to a theory posted by another user, it’s possible that the native Xbox application on Windows 10 registered with the game. However, that scenario leaves the question of why did Hearthstone show up in the Achievements section?
In August of last year, Blizzard stated that it plans to keep supporting Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft for at least two decades. Speaking to GameSpot just before Gamescom 2015, Blizzard Entertainment executive producer Hamilton Chu teased that there’s a possibility of Hearthstone releasing on consoles. However, he cautioned that it would require significant work; noting that the shift from PC to smartphones/tablet alone took considerable time.
It has been a year since then and as we approach Gamescom 2016, could Blizzard be planning to announce a console release, complete with cross-play functionality? BlizzCon 2016 is also approaching and we could possibly hear an announcement then.
Hearthstone is about to receive its fourth expansion pack called One Night in Karazhan, bringing 45 new collectible cards. With new content and the will to expand the game’s horizons, I believe it’s time we saw the card game arrive on consoles.
