Prey will officially release worldwide for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 5, Bethesda Softworks confirmed just hours ago.
Alongside the release date, the developer also released a brand new gameplay trailer for the upcoming sci-fi game which drops key story details for us.
Narrated by the game’s protagonist Morgan Yu, Prey is set around an alien infestation on the Talos I research facility. Yu himself was involved in performing experiments on the aliens which have the ability to morph. However, the experiments somehow begin changing Yu as well, giving him similar alien abilities.
As it is with such research facilities, something goes wrong and there is threat of an outbreak. Yu is tasked with containing and eradicating the alien threat before it can reach Earth. Presumably, the storyline will have its share of political twists and turns, along with other surprises.
Bethesda has also announced the Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack preorder bonus, which “consists of Morgan Yu’s family heirloom Margrave shotgun and tools to fight threats aboard Talos I.” These tools are three Neuromods which players can use to unlock new abilities, two Medkits, and a Fabrication plan to create the shotgun and ammo. There’s also “a starter kit for building tools and weapons, and a unique upgrade to help players preserve their limited resources.”
Prey is being developed by Arkane Studios in Austin, Texas. This is a separate team from the Dishonored and Dishonored 2 developers. Creative director Raphael Colantonio previously described Prey as “a hybrid game where there’s narrative mixed with action mixed with a little bit of [an] RPG layer.”
The first Prey was released in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360 and developed by Human Head Studios. Prey 2 was previously in development with Human Head Studios at the helm, but was ultimately cancelled in 2014. Arkane’s Prey is a completely reworked reboot.
