Following an earlier leak, NetherRealm Studios has officially confirmed Robin as the next DC character to be joining the roster of Injustice 2.
Between Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne, the developer has opted to go with the latter. He’s the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, making him the grandson of arch-villain Ra’s al Ghul.
An accompanying trailer reveals him to be armed with a Katana as well as an assortment of gadgets, which come out during various combo-attacks and abilities.
The inclusion of Robin begs the question of how the storyline has progressed from the first Injustice game. At the end, Robin was arrested for serving under Superman’s tyrannical reign. Hence, it’s unclear as to how he escaped his sentence and is out on the streets in Injustice 2.
NetherRealm Studios has not dropped the idea of releasing obscure characters for Injustice 2. Studio boss Ed Boon hinted that there is a good chance of releasing third-party characters from outside of the DC Universe. He exclaimed that the model proved extremely popular in the case of Mortal Kombat X.
Injustice 2 is said to feature the largest roster in the studio’s history, both in terms of on-disc and DLC characters. As much as nine characters have been so far locked behind a pay-wall. There’s no telling how many more the developer plans to release as paid characters in the future.
That being said, Boon made it clear that Injustice 2 will not incorporate pay-to-win microtransactions. Any gear available in the game will not be sold for real-world money. That’s ironic seeing how so many characters have to be paid for. Perhaps the developer will reveal at a later time that the characters can be unlocked through in-game currency as well. We can only hope.
Injustice 2 is scheduled to release on May 16 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A PC version has so far been not mentioned.
