The Avengers Project is only the beginning in a multi-game partnership between Square Enix and Marvel, the companies announced today.
Details are slim at this point, but it has been confirmed that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal are working together on the project. The former is of course known for its amazing work on the Tomb Raider franchise while the latter just recently finished up with the latest installment in the Deus Ex universe.
An accompanying teaser trailer fails in providing more information. “They say the time of heroes is over,” narrates a mysterious woman. “That if you’re different, you’re dangerous. But I know the truth. The world will always need heroes. We just need to reassemble.”
While it’s said that The Avengers Project will feature all of the main characters, it’s yet to be classified whether the game is paying homage to the movies or the comics. In case of the latter and depending on the timeline, there were many who joined the Avengers family. It’s safe to say that we’ll at least be seeing Captain America, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, and such iconic characters.
Lastly, The Avengers Project will feature an original story which takes place in a universe fans “can play in for years to come”. Perhaps that hints at an online open-world in a MMORPG setting. More details are said to arrive next year.
It should be noted that the label, The Avengers Project, is simply a placeholder and the game remains untitled for now.
