There are no current plans to release Final Fantasy XV on the upcoming Nintendo Switch console, stated game director Hajime Tabata.
While there is a growing interest of bringing the game to PC, a port for the new Nintendo hybrid console is not being considered.
Speaking with DualShockers, the developer admitted that he is yet to personally work with the upcoming console. Though, he believes the game might be able to run on the Switch.
“There are no plans for Switch at the moment, but overall, there is interest in the platform among the development team,” he said. “Incidentally, I think that Switch would be really cool if it could run Android apps on its portable screen.”
Square Enix is just one of over a dozen developers who have signed up to bring content for the Nintendo Switch. While Final Fantasy XV might not be releasing for the console, Square Enix has confirmed to be bringing games like I Am Setsuna and Dragon Quest XI to the new platform.
Announced over a decade ago, Final Fantasy XV has seen through a tough development period. Many feared that the final product would be incredibly underwhelming. However, the game was warmly received by critics upon release and lauded for its fantastic storytelling and gameplay aspects, especially the epic boss fights.
Last month, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XV has shipped over six million copies to retailers worldwide. This includes both digital and physical sales. However, the Japanese comapny didn’t produce a breakdown to clarify just how many units of each medium were sent out. Additionally, it’s unknown just how many units were sent out for each platform. Safe to say, PlayStation 4 dominated in that regard.
Final Fantasy XV features a rich world full of exciting challenges and secrets to discover. It’s now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
