Last year, FIFA 17 released with a single-player career mode called The Journey. The story-driven experience was received warmly by the player-base. Its success has guaranteed another season of The Journey which will be released with FIFA 18 later this year.
During its earnings call last night, publisher Electronic Arts revealed that more than 10 million players enjoyed The Journey. However, it wasn’t clarified as to whether the figure also includes players who abandoned the career mode after fiddling with it for a few minutes. In addition to that, CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that the number of Ultimate Team players is up by nearly 10 percent year-over-year.
Regarding FIFA 18, it will be packed with several improvements over the previous installment. Besides featuring an Ultimate Team, it will boast “the most emotionally immersive and connect” experience yet to be found in the series.
The Journey Season 2 will feature new characters and story-lines. That perhaps suggests that EA is done with the career of Alex Hunter and will be tasking players to fill the shoes of another new face. At the end of The Journey, Hunter won the FA Cup and earned a call-up to the England squad. While the story could easily expand into its second season, it’s more likely that we’ll be seeing a new star born in FIFA 18.
FIFA 17 was the top-selling console title in the world last year, outselling the likes of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and even Grand Theft Auto V. That’s no mere achievement. The series refuses to die down in popularity. If anything, each installment further strengthens the FIFA brand.
FIFA 17 was the first game in the series that was powered by the publisher’s Frosbite engine, as opposed to the in-house Ignite engine that has been powering the previous sports games. FIFA 18 will obviously follow suit.
