Following an animated teaser last week, Bandai Namco has confirmed today that its mysterious project is a role-playing game called Code Vein.

The latest issue of Famitsu describes it to feature a “dungeon exploration-type” experience, with a steep difficulty curve. It is being developed by Shift, the publisher’s in-house development team that is behind the God Eater series. Yusuke Tomizawa is heading the project, with director Hiroshi Yoshimura and producer Keita Iizuka.

Code Vein will take place in the near future, a time when the world has gone to ruin. The living has been reduced to revenant-vampire-like creatures that possess supernatural abilities. In order to survive, they have isolated themselves to a closed society called Vein.

While they have transcended humanity, they are always in dire need of blood. Failing to feed forces them to turn into monsters. We are assuming that the female character featured in last week’s teaser trailer is one of them. Her blood-red eyes and ghastly transformation certainly acts the part.

Code Vein is also confirmed to feature a “buddy” system that will allow players to explore dungeons with their friends. In the weaponry department, the game will mostly feature close-range weapons such as two- and one-handed swords.

According to Gematsu, the following are considered key items:

  • Blood Veil – The Blood Veil is a Revenant-original piece of equipment that sucks up the blood of Losts. It’s usually shaped like clothing and functions as armor. A dedicated mechanism appears at the time of blood sucking, and the user’s mask sees an ominous change.
  • Special Ability: “Tempered Blood” – An action that can be triggered after a successful blood sucking attack via the Blood Vale, and that depends on the blood obtained from the Lost. There are a number of variations, such as strengthening yourself, weakening enemies, and direct attacks.

Cold Vein is nearly 35 percent complete. A worldwide reveal is expected to take place on April 20, with a full trailer arriving next month.
