The good news is that Gearbox Software has announced a new project today. The bad news, though, is that it is not the long-awaited Borderlands 3.

Following the disastrous reception of Battleborn last year, the studio has advanced to merge the first-person shooter genre with the mechanics from collectible card games. As confusing and bizarre as that sounds, Gearbox Software seems fairly confident that its followers will enjoy whatever is heading for them.

“Project 1v1” is a placeholder name and, as it should be obvious, pits two opponents against one another in fast-paced combat.

“Project 1v1 is the code name for Gearbox’s top-secret, in-development, competitive first-person shooter that combines the action of fast-paced 1v1 first-person combat with the metagame strategy of a collectible card game,” reads the announcement on the official website.

Gearbox Software is planning to hold a short technical test in the coming weeks, which will be closed to a few participants. The developer is looking for a “limited number of players to test the online infrastructure and learn what players like you think about the game in order to inform and influence future development.” Take note that the closed testing will be held on North American servers, meaning that players from outside will experience delay and lag. Hence, it is better to not apply at all.

We are very close to Gamescom 2017. It is unlikely that we will get to see footage from the game at the event. Perhaps the developer will unveil more about the game later this fall. In either case, it is probable that many fans of the studio are highly disappointed. We know for a fact that Borderlands 3 is in development but the developer is not willing to give it an official nod.
