Due to a 15-hour server outage on April 11, players are receiving free apology gifts to anyone logging in to the game on the weekend. Epic Games blamed a “critical failure” of its database for the problems that plagued Fortnite that fateful Wednesday.
The gifts entail cosmetics for Fortnite: Battle Royale and Fortnite: Save the World. Players of the former will receive a Black Bling gift and players of the latter will receive a Troll Stash Llama.
Fortnite players need only access the store in game during the weekend to receive their rewards for their patience.
The outage occurred after Fortnite was updated to version 3.5, which saw the inclusion of several additions and alterations to the game. These include a guided missile nerf, a new item called Port-a-Fort, a replay system for highlights, a few weapon tweaks and most notably, the new 50vs50 (2.0) limited time game mode to replace the High Explosives 2.0 mode.
The 50vs50 game mode was highly popular when it first came out, and it has come back with more ambitious changes, for which you can learn more about here.
It’s good to see that the supposedly critical problem has been solved; for a game like Fortnite that went from unpopular to extremely popular, the sudden surge in stress and pressure could cause some unbearable problems.
Prior to the new update to Fortnite, there were several lag and server issues plaguing the game. In hindsight, those issues were probably a precursor to the outage. It is unclear how exactly the team solved the problem with their database, but it is safe to assume that a process that would normally take days or even weeks to complete was done within hours. My condolences go out to the database management team, please get some well-deserved rest.
