Following the departure of game director Ben Brode, the development team of Hearthstone is losing another core family member.
Taking to Twitter earlier today, executive producer Hamilton Chu confirmed his parting as well. The community might not be aware of this but most of the “flavor text” featured in the collectible card game was penned by him, including the “Whispers of the Old Gods” expansion pack.
Weird! It was mine too…

Chu was also responsible for strategic planning and business operations for Hearthstone, providing management support for the development leadership. In addition, he was involved with other projects from the publishing giant. This included leading the strategic initiatives group from Blizzard to handle business operations for World of Warcraft, and managing creative development departments.
Before joining Blizzard, Chu served as a producer on Halo and Halo 2 for Bungie.
Chu and Brode leaving Blizzard within the same weekend might not be a coincidence. Their profiles on Twitter have been updated to “starting up something new!” since then. Brode previously hinted about opening a new chapter in his life by forming his own studio. Hence, there is a likelihood that the two former Hearthstone developers might join forces under the new mysterious banner.
However, what games or genres will Brode tackle with his own studio? Could he be planning to release a new collectible card game that does away with all the complaints the community has regularly stacked up for Hearthstone?
