Horizon Lunar Colony is probably the most uninspiring within the repertoire of Overwatch maps. As a rather dull and grey map, it seems Blizzard intends to add some additional elements and color to the colony on the moon.
The fact that the Overwatch team is working on this was revealed by someone in the Blizzard forums. The changes to the map were not supposed to be included in the recent PTR, the test server for Overwatch. We know this because the Principal Level Designer, David Adams, stated that it was a mistake and issued a statement to try and explain what players were seeing.
“Well that wasn’t supposed to happen but there you go.” Adams says, “We have some changes that we are still working on and testing for the map so what you are seeing here may not be final. Also as an FYI it won’t be released with the next patch and no eta for when it will be released as it is still a rework in progress.”
The video showcases several differences to the map with the most major being a substantial amount of cover added for point A and B, making the anti-gravity zone a lot more viable to traverse. Some aesthetic changes were also made to the map, featuring more greenery in the botany section of the map.
Though the lore on the Horizon Lunar Colony suggests a very bleak environment, the Overwatch team believe that lore should never come at the cost of gameplay. The additional greenery is a testament to that belief, adding more color simply for the sake of a more enjoyable experience in an otherwise scary place.
Public response regarding the changes have been generally positive, unsurprising considering the fact that most people declared Horizon Lunar Colony among the worst maps in Overwatch alongside Junkertown.
